TIP OF THE WEEK

Giving Choices

One of the best tactics to get a child to comply with what you would like them to do is to give them choices (this works for all ages. I use this on my high school students). You might think that if they are refusing to eat dinner then asking if they want option “a” or option “b” won’t make any difference, but it often would. When children have a voice in decisions and make their own selections they are invested in the matter, and it is what they want. This can be used in almost every realm of parenting, and although it isn’t full-proof, you will see it works more often than you think.
