The job of a husband when your wife is pregnant
As a husband we need to know the things that the mother of our child goes through during pregnancy, this includes the struggles, the mood swings, the cravings, the sensitivity and generally how to be a good husband and father. Our job is to make sure we are there every step of the way, to support and love your wife unconditionally, and to be there for your wife and your baby.
Learn and Understand what is happening during pregnancy
I attended a breastfeeding session where 85% of the attendees are pregnant moms and 15% are husbands that want to know how things work starting from reproductive organs, how babies develop, the do’s and don’ts and the process of giving birth.
During the session I attended, the host gave information on how things work, how the baby grows inside the womb, and the proper positioning. When it came to the birth-giving demonstration, it was an awkward feeling – not just for me but for the other men who were there supporting their wives, but as the session came to an end, I was proud that I attended because I learned a lot a baby’s development, how it progresses, how and what we should feed our babies and the do’s and don’ts during pregnancy.
Read about pregnancy
I’m not into reading books, but because I want to learn more and support my wife, I read about everything. I read a few books about preparing for a baby, and what to do after the baby is born, and man, I realized that I had no clue after reading up on everything. There is a TON of info out there with tips on everything from making your wife comfortable at home, to that mad rush to the hospital, to caring for both baby and mother after birth. Reading up helps you to be prepared, will give you a good idea of what to expect, and will improve your chances of having a healthy family.
Always see your doctor
This is an absolute MUST. Be sure that you are right there with your wife every step of the way. Be sure to check in regularly with your doctor to be updated on what is happening inside your wife’s tummy, and make sure everything is going smoothly. If there are any surprises, or important decisions that need to be made, don’t miss the appointment and force your wife to make that decision alone. Always take your doctor’s advice and talk it through with your wife.
Eat healthy foods
Babies eat what the mother eats, so be sure that you help her to avoid processed foods, fast foods, and junk foods. They are ok once in a while, to help improve your wife’s mood, but not everyday – eating healthy will improve your baby’s chances of being healthy. Eating healthy foods such as vegetables, fruits and don’t forget to give our pregnant wife vitamin or supplements recommended by your doctor as this will help in the development of the baby.
As a husband we need to ensure that we satisfy our wife emotionally, make her feel secure, respected, and loved – not just with words, but with actions.
Make our wife feel special
Hold her baby bump, talk to the baby, and tell her how beautiful she looks with the bump, let her know that she is beautiful and perfect the way she is. Cook healthy food and let her indulge with her food cravings, but keep a close watch on what she eats. Always give her a back and leg massage as this will help her relax and relieve a bit of stress in her lower back due to the growing weight of the baby. Go shopping with her to buy baby clothes, always make yourself available no matter how busy you are.
Pregnant women have mood swings, she will be agitated and uncomfortable so you need to be patient with her – even when that temper flares up. Pregnancy releases various hormones which can affect your wife’s mood significantly, so be patient at all times. Stress (in severe cases) can cause premature birth which puts your baby at risk, so it’s better to let her vent, and then show her love and make her laugh.
Prepare a pregnancy bag
When it’s time for the baby to be born, you do not want to be disorganized and doing things last minute – be prepared! You need to have this bag ready to go well ahead of time…I had our pregnancy bag packed at the end of the 7th month! This bag should have a few days worth of comfy clothes for your wife (and any basic cosmetics she asks for), baby’s clothes, mobile charger, some snacks, and anything else that may be needed – it’s better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it!
This is one of the most important jobs we have – being there! We need to be right by her side every step of the way, because we are the one our wife’s looking up to for strength. Always hold her hands and give her your 100% of your attention and love. Being a husband and father means you MUST be there for your family, so be there for her and your child right from the start.
